The film begs the questions: who is the real innovator: is it man who has found use for wool, or is wool the hero as it continues to get better over time with its natural inherent properties?

Niels Nielsen completed his master's degree in materials science and mechanical engineering at UC Davis in 1979. He then spent 28 years with Hewlett-Packard: a productive and fascinating career that today finds him dubbed the pioneer of inkjet technology. His efforts also brought HP a dozen patents. He was one of the key members of a tiny team headed by Frank Cloutier, and based at HP's then-new campus in Corvallis, Oregon, which embraced the challenge of creating a compact, quiet, reliable and affordable thermal inkjet printer. Many HP insiders were convinced the goal was impossible; as a result, Cloutier and his team of creatively eccentric engineers were left alone to work at their own unconventional pace. Over the next few years, Nielsen and his colleagues developed prototypes with parts "liberated" from other HP projects, or simply purchased at local hardware stores. The eventual result, HP's ThinkJet, debuted in March 1984. Along with its 1988 descendant, the DeskJet, the ThinkJet completely re-defined the home computer market, as customers quickly realized that a personal computer wasn't much use without a printer attached to it. Nielsen left HP in 2007 and now pursues several part-time activities, but always makes time to host the rowdy weekly meetings of musicians and engineering tinkerers dubbed the Corvallis Vacuum Tube Collective. No manual alone can prepare young entrepreneurs and innovators for the challenges of launching a new business, organization, or product. From venture capital to advisory boards, from brand development to office space, there are many hurdles along the way from idea to action. Although the startup process presents great risk and uncertainty, it also unleashes unprecedented opportunity. How can universities foster a culture of innovation and creative problem solving, both on and off campus? What resources and opportunities are available to students with big ideas and small budgets? How can young innovators embrace initial failures as part of the process of getting off the ground? This panel of both new and veteran entrepreneurs will share their stories, setbacks, and key lessons learned from their own experiences of starting up. Moderated by President Bill Clinton Panelists: Kenneth Cole, Chairman and CEO, Kenneth Cole Productions Jack Dorsey, Co-founder and CEO, Square, Inc., Co-founder and Executive Chairman, Twitter, Inc. Since 2005, CGI members have challenged the status quo by proposing bold and cutting-edge ideas, some never envisioned before, that led to disruptive breakthroughs. Going forward, how can CGI members continue to take worthwhile risks and accept that experiencing failure is a critical element to achieving success? How can they “dream big” in order to unlock innovation and drive social change? This session will share the perspectives of forward-thinking leaders and innovators from across sectors, including a live conversation with the International Space Station on exploring new frontiers. PARTICIPANTS: President Bill Clinton, Founding Chairman, Clinton Global Initiative; 42nd President of the United States Chelsea Clinton, Vice Chair, Clinton Foundation Hillary Rodham Clinton, Former U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Senator from New York Cady Coleman, Astronaut, NASA, Colonel, U.S. Air Force Peter H. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), specifically cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes, kill more people than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Nearly 80 percent of NCD deaths – 29 million – occur in low- and middle-income countries. By 2020, the World Health Organization estimates that chronic diseases will surpass infectious diseases as the leading cause of death in many African countries. Once perceived to be a disease that only affected adults in the developed world, type 2 diabetes now impacts virtually all ages across all income levels. Yet current chronic disease prevention measures are not always targeted towards this younger and more global demographic. In this session, panelists and CGI U commitment-makers will explore how: • Young innovators are designing successful NCD interventions such as low-cost, early detection cancer diagnostic tools, which are easily deliverable to low-resource settings • Stakeholders from academia, government, and grassroots NGOs can address chronic disease risk factors such as poor diet and a lack of physical activity Moderator: Thuy Vu, Host, KQED, PBS San Francisco Participants: Doyin Oluwole, Executive Director, Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon Sonya Shin, Associate Physician, Division of Global Health Equity, Brigham and Women's Hospital Phil Southerland, Co-founder and CEO, Team Novo Nordisk, Founder and President, Team Type 1 Foundation
