Around the world, approximately 2.6 billion people live on less than two dollars per day. For many of these people, the costs of basic services are so high that they have no choice but to innovate to make ends meet. Such constraint-based innovation has sparked a grassroots industrial revolution around the world. With production equipment available more widely and at lower costs than ever before and access to information increasing with the growing use of mobile phones, the poor are seizing the tools available to them to engineer solutions uniquely tailored to their problems. Innovations in social media, mobile technology, robotics, and artificial intelligence have fundamentally transformed our lives and the way we interact with each other. By 2050, affordable housing could be built by 3D printers, drones could deliver clean water or life-saving medicines, and renewables could be our biggest energy source. Yet projections also point to a world where atmospheric carbon dioxide levels will have doubled since the pre-industrial era, where natural resources are strained by a population of almost 10 billion, where rising temperatures and a lack of sanitation increases the risk of tropical diseases, and where a growing climate refugee crisis threatens to create a generation of children deprived of the skills or opportunity to fulfill their potential. To address these existential challenges, a new generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, and creative problem-solvers are developing new models for carbon neutrality, from residential solar to fuel-efficient transportation. They are harnessing the power of design to build responsive and resilient health delivery systems. In this session, panelists will explore how students and universities can: • Establish courses, academic programs, labs, and maker-spaces focused on climate change and public health, where hands-on experience is required, unconventional thinking is encouraged, and collaboration is critical, • Incentivize discovery, invention, and innovation among students through a wide range of seed funding challenges, pitch competitions, and mentorship opportunities, and • Ensure that a culture of sustainable design is democratized across universities and geographies, rooted in full community participation and real-world results. Panel Discussion: Moderator: Chelsea Clinton, Vice Chair, Clinton Foundation Participants: Ayah Bdeir, Founder and CEO, littleBits Paul E. Farmer, Chief Strategist and Co-Founder, Partners In Health; Kolokotrones University Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School; Chief of Division of Global Health Equity, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Partners In Health; Harvard Medical School; Brigham and Women's Hospital Lisa Jackson, VP, Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, Apple Samantha Marquez, Innovator and Activist, Yale University Vivek Murthy, 19th Surgeon General of the United States Dr. M. Hybrid art/technology piece visually documenting the evolution of CGI. "Memorium" is the new single from Midnight Juggernauts upcoming album "Uncanny Valley". Coming soon through Siberia and Record Makers. www.recordmakers.com About the Video: WIREFRAME MEMORIES: A CHRONOLOGICAL TOUR THROUGH THE PIONEER YEARS OF CGI
With Computer Generated Imagery now a standard feature of our visual language and often indistinguishable from reality, we decided to take a long look back to the genesis of this technology. Well before the blockbuster milestones and mainstream acceptance, we chart CGI's origins mid last century within the experimental computer labs of universities, corporations, and various trailblazing individuals. These were the pioneer years of CGI. From the groundbreaking years of these first footprints, we follow the evolution of the technology as each new trial grows more ambitious and complex. From basic science/engineering line animations and wireframe oddities, to 3D and artistic experimentation, and the first trials to replicate human likeness and emotion. While some may seem crude by today's standards these watershed trials and experimental demos were all key critical building blocks.
In a field which quickly casts aside milestones as each new technological advance is superseded, this study sheds light on the pioneers and achievements which paved the way. Of the early innovators featured here, some went on to teach, a few disappeared, others started massive software companies, and some are running Pixar.
Contemplating this subject of early digital footprints of technology, the band realized it reflected similar themes to their song Memorium. They each recount a tracing through discarded remnants of the past. It seemed logical to combine the two pieces, and so this visual homage was created.
